Call for Interactive Art

ACM Multimedia is the premier international conference in the area of multimedia within the field of computer science. The 2026 ACM Multimedia conference will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 10 to 14, 2026. Multimedia research focuses on technologies that enable the use and exchange of content, integrating multiple perspectives across digital modalities, including images, text, video, audio, speech, music, sensory media, and sensor data.

As in previous years, ACM Multimedia is calling for work addressing the artistic side of these perspectives. Specifically, we invite original works from practitioners and researchers creating innovative and culturally rich multimedia systems with artistic merit.

Given the recent developments in foundation models and generative approaches for all modalities of multimedia, we seek works showcasing interactions between humans and machines involving both human-created and automatically generated digital content, highlighting and reflecting upon creativity, discovery, and critical thinking in all aspects involved. We welcome works that particularly address fusions, intersections, transformations, and paradigm shifts in human- and AI-generated technologies; works that provoke contemplation, address contemporary issues, and interactively engage viewers in discovery while stimulating intellectual adventure and creativity.

Exemplary topics and technologies include, but are not limited to, interactive arts using generative approaches (e.g., generative and adaptive image and sound installations), hybrid art, interactive media, digital comics, games, cultural heritage, VR/AR digital art, digital communities, digital humanism, mobile media, digital art performances, and (syn)aesthetic exploration. Submissions may also include non-interactive works (e.g., algorithmic film, generative audiovisual pieces) when the artistic intent and presentation plan are clearly articulated.

Accepted works will be presented from November 10–14, 2026, during the main conference in the main conference space. All submissions will be juried by the Interactive Art Program Committee. The committee will review submissions based on the following criteria:

Submission Guidelines

Please submit a two-page demo/video paper (excluding references) in standard ACM format. The paper should not be submitted anonymously (i.e., author name(s) and affiliation(s) should be included). An additional appendix page is requested, presenting an information sheet describing the necessary physical requirements for the exhibit (size of works, spatial layout, power requirements, lighting conditions, sound environment, Internet connection, and any other special requirements). No abstract submission is required. The full paper submission deadline is April 23, 2026.

Optionally, but strongly encouraged, authors may also submit a supplementary video demonstrating the artwork. The video must be no longer than 3 minutes, in mp4 format, and playable in the current version of VLC. Please make the video available online and provide the link in the project information sheet or in the submission email.

The two-page descriptions of accepted artworks will be published in the ACM Multimedia 2026 Conference Proceedings and included in the ACM Digital Library.

On-site Facilities at ACM MM 2026

Once accepted, participants are expected to bring all equipment required for their artworks, including hardware such as projectors, laptops, sensors, PCs, and power transformers (local power supply: 220V, 60 Hz, Type N and C). No financial support will be provided for exhibiting the artworks. Space will be provided, and the organizers will endeavor to meet the requests of the authors as outlined in the appendix page.

Submission Deadline
